Linda asks…

What do you think of my poem? English is not my first language so correct me if you must and help me finish it?

I am standing in the sunflower field
And hear a call like a golden finch’.
A slither of love-like [to which I yield]
Calls me to a surrendering flinch.
Butterflies flit among the blossoms
With flashing sparkles of lustrous colors.
Emotions have turned quickly within my bosom
Without a hint, a hush or a sputter
But in great outburst to overflowing.

The somnolent summer’ now asleep
Through these God-forsaken sullen skies.
Sunflowers flaunt an enchanting yellow
Before me like a field of daisies.
I feel the wind; a sweep
Across my face like floating kisses
And hear the call, − the mellow
In the voice in my ears that caresses
Me, and at once I know it is you.

There is a glint in your eyes
Like the glow of celestial crystals
[You are standing there] in my view
Like the pristine look of autumn leaves
In the gentle breeze of a season new.
Trees are tinged green and yellow
Like the bloom of sunflowers.

And I want it to end with this:
To ends where this love has fledged,
I surmise that I will live and love the days
And live and love with you.

Ruth asks…

Solving hamster obesity!?

I am a new hamster owner (2 months), and i didn’t know much about hamsters. so when i looked at her food bowl, i noticed her favorites were sunflower seeds. so i started giving her a lot of them. now i’ve found out that they are very fattening, and she has gained a ton of weight! also, she will not eat any of the other foods! how do i cut back on her sunflower seeds and get her to eat other foods? i am afraid she will simply stop eating if i take some of the seeds away.

Susan answers:

Use the hamster mix as provided. It is the right balance of seeds and grass pellets etc to keep your hamster healthy. Dont give her extra sunflower seeds. Get her a wheel to run in so that she can get fit.

If she doesnt like the other foods then be strict about it and only give her the right mix…. Eventually she will understand that if she doesnt eat what is there, theres no “extra” sunflower seeds coming!

Your Questions About New Sunflower

Mary asks…

Question about dwarf hamsters.?

I bought two dwarf hamsters today. The male, an adult, and a female, a baby. Anyway, my syrian hamster recently died so I’m using his cage for the female. (I cleaned it out) and I bought a new cage for the male. Anyway, I still have the hamster food from the syrian hamster that died. Alot acuallty. anyway, my question is: can dwarf hamsters eat syrian hamster food? The food contains sunflower seeds, corn, and pieces of grain. Please answer soon. Thanks,
~J.D

Susan answers:

Dwarfs will eat the gerbil-hamster mix. They will eat most treats too. They r just like normal hamsters. You should let them be for a day or so to get themselves settled down. But, amek sure there is plenty of water. Veggies n fruit: apple w/out seed banana carrot peas grass corn pear melon and more if they don’t eat the dried mix right away. Try giving it to them just a lone and if it seems to big for them to eat without struggling then pick out the smaller pieces and give them that with fruit until u can find some smaller food. They shouldn’t have to much troubles eating it because they can chew through plastic so i’m sure they can chew through a big sun flower seed. But, there really not that different from regular hamster or syrian hamster for that matter. Hope this helped and good luck!!

Nancy asks…

If you could give a flower to anyone on R&S what would you give and to who?

Pangel-Gerber Daisies. Beautiful and bright, no thorns, a flower everyone can love.
EponaWillow-Double Delight roses, just when you think you know everything you see a new depth and beauty to her.
Reigan and Queen of Tartz- Dahlias. There unique and fun, but beautiful too

There are so many more but it would take forever, so to the rest of you I give a yellow rose of friendship. What would yours be?

Susan answers:

To each of my friends I would give the invitation to visit me and pick whichever flowers you wish.

All of mine are wild, beautiful and unique each in its own way.

Just like my friends :-)

However, Pixie, above and beyond what you might pick I’d offer you a Great Mullein, of which I have several.

Thank you for the Sunflower :-)

Nancy asks…

please I only have 3 days!!! science fair help?!?

heres my project http://all-science-fair-projects.com/project1152_58_1.html
long story short i was guna do it but now my teacher says its too dangerous so she told me to do the experiment but substitute the gases with sunflower, canola, and vegetable oil. but i cant say how efficient oil is with this project so i need a new title and something new to measure kuz my teacher says it needs to have something legitimate to measure and have a purpose. ideas?!

Susan answers:

All of these oils should be able to burn. So to complete your experiment, you need to measure your water and oil you’re going to use, take the temp of the water and the oils before you start anything, then light you oils underneath containers that will tolerate fire, with your water in them. After a chosen amount of time, put the flames out and measure the temp of each different water and see if there’s an appreciable difference. Remember your experiment will be successful even if you disprove your hypothesis. The water should all be the same temp and amount and the oil should be too, before it’s lit. You’ll need to use three different containers for both the oil and water. You should do some research into each oil to make you hypothesis.

Title, “Water is Denser than Oil, But Oil Can Destroy It” “Cooking Oils Gone Bad” “Cooking Oils Always Did Think Water Was Sort of Dense” “You’re Fired!”

Good luck!

Mandy asks…

Cetain foods and pregnancy?

Why can you eat luinch meat while you are pregnant?

Is it ok to have cat fish? or sardines? becasue i love that!

What foods should i avoid?

this is my frist pregnancy and lately i have been indulging in cheesy puffs, burger king, mcdonalds, ice cream, sardines, pork skins, lemonade, sunflower seeds, and a bunch of other foods.

can you eat too much while pregnant? i am about 8 weeks and all i think about is my next meal or snack. I have never loved food so much.

also if i am eating alot now why have lost 5 pounds since i got pregnant?

will all this eating cause me to gain alot of weight later on in my pregnancy???

How can i lower my stress level? i just had a death in the family, and we were really close, and also me and my boyfriend have been arguing on and off.

Thnaks so much for the info pplz! sorry for so many questions, Im new to this.

Susan answers:

I’ve ate lunch meat since even before I knew I was pregnant and still going, and my baby is healthy. Tuna, and swordfish are a NO-NO! They contain mercury, and that can be harmful to the baby. Please stay away form all that nasty greasy food. That isn’t good for you or the baby Not one BIT. That can clog arteries which can lead to miscarriages or and early birth. Eating a lot is normal, but eat in moderation’s. Don’t eat so much at once. And never say or think that ur eating for 2. Ur losing weight b/c ur not eating the right things and ur pooping it right out. Yo baby don’t want that junk all the time. Ur stress level is up b/c of the way and what you eat. Please watch how eat. PLEASE!! If ur not seeing a nutritionist yet, please find one. Any other general info see WebMD!

Betty asks…

My rough Collie Coat is not Full/Puffy enough?

I have a two year old collie, about 45-50lbs and I don’t think her coat is full enough. This is my first dog so I am not sure if she should look like this, I have not seen another collie in real life to compare.

I don’t know anything about her parents, she is a rescue.

-I mostly feed her Blue Buffalo, thats what I was told was good for her coat, & homemade turkey
-bathe her every week & brush her everyday shampoo use is zodiac and an oatmel conditioner…and have now turn to the new Furminator shampoo

I heard a teaspoon of sunflower oil will help, which is a good one then?

http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=gmRP1XHGDcgLslrDSpm5XA%3D%3D

Susan answers:

It’s usually the show Collie’s that have that thick fluffy coat.
Maybe one of her parents was smooth haired, and one was long, making her medium haired?

Bathing a dog every week isn’t good for their coat or skin! It should only be done every few months, if you really have too.
I give my dogs salmon oil, it is very good for their coats. But it won’t make a dogs fur any longer/thicker. Just shinier.

Ruth asks…

My roborovski hamster don’t eat?

I bought 2 roborovski hamster 4 days ago, and i rarely see them eating anything, they don’t even eat sunflower seeds, no cucumber, no rice either. I thought they aren’t used to their new home yet, but it has been 4 days. I don’t want them to starving. I bought them the Nutriphase Gold, and Kaytee Perfect Choice, so they would have more choices, but they just don’t eat anything. Please help me =(

Susan answers:

Just because you haven’t seen them eat doesn’t mean they’re not. Those foods aren’t very good. Take away all the seed mixes, and give them Mazuri hamster food, or Oxbow healthy harvest. Both come in either a lab block form, or in a O-shaped form (and are nutritionally complete) so you could count how many pieces you give them and then keep track if they eat or not. It’s unlikely for hamsters to not eat at all to the point that they starve, so don’t worry.

Helen asks…

Calling all top end Y answer gourmets?

My supermarket is launching a new ready meal, borrowed from the tables of the rich, to try to educate the palates of the local hoi polloi. It simulates the actual dish flavours by chemical additives and we would be pleased to learn, if you have tried the real thing, how close we have got?
Roast grignons sur le beouf on a divan of circumcised oysters avec third degree grilled basmati stuffed sunflower coloured peppers.

Susan answers:

That made me laugh :-D Especially “divan” and “circumcised oysters.” Thanks!

Ruth asks…

Trimming too often? is it possiblë?

I have a four year old clyd x mare. Generally people tell me their horses get trimmed less in the winter. Our schedule has been a bit off lately. She went five weeks then four and now another four in between trims. I have no problem paying to have it done, it just seems excessive. Three months ago she moved to a new barn, new feeding schedule and went on gelatin and sunflower oil. But I doooubt the gelatin is making her feet grow that fast. Prior to this I have owned her one year and she typically went 6-8 weeks. Also this is not on the advice of the farrier per se… I see a flare or some foot coming in and call her, not her call me as some farriers do. Opinions? Experience?

Susan answers:

I trim my horses every 4 weeks. That keeps their feet in very good condition. The frequency of the trim is not the issue so much as the quality of the trim. If the feet can go longer, good. In periods where there is more rapid growth, you may have to go with 4 weeks. If feet are trimmed more often, dependent upon growth again, the trimmer just takes less off. It is not a difficult decision. Just because feet are trimmed, that does not mean the same amount is taken off each time. A trim must be performed according to the condition of the hooves at the time of the trim. Again, has nothing to do with frequency. As a general rule, drafts need trims more often. If you are seeing flares, you could be developing a problem. I would rather trim more often than begin to see wall separation in my horses’ hooves.

Remember this. The quality of the hoof is generally deemed by the nutrition of the horse. The quantity of the hoof growth is primarily a function of concussion (the amount of exercise/movement of the horse). Gelatin is nothing more than a protein source in the diet. Would take a boat load to have an effect on hoof quality.

You did not mention why she is getting the sunflower oil. Just curious. Sunflower is actually the worst oil you can give a horse with corn oil and rice bran oil coming in a 2nd and 3rd. If you are giving oil for the fat content, and I have never seen a clyde that was skinny, but the best choice would be canola if you give any type at all.

That’s my take on it.
